I’ve spent more than 20 years in healthcare, most recently as a clinical instructor and clinical preceptor teaching nursing students the kind of math that used to make me nervous too. I hold an MSN in Nursing Education, and I’ve taught dosage calculations and clinical reasoning in the classroom, in skills lab, and at the bedside.
Semester after semester, I saw the same thing happen. Capable students who understood the material in lecture, who could explain the concept back to me without hesitating, would freeze the moment a real medication calculation question showed up on an exam. It was never that they couldn’t do the math. No one had ever slowed down to show them how to think it through, the way an experienced nurse does almost without noticing.
That freeze isn’t just a test-taking problem. Medication math is patient safety. The confidence to work through a calculation calmly, and know your answer is right, is part of good clinical judgment, and it’s a skill you can actually build. Success Lab RN is my attempt to teach it the way I teach my own students: start with what you need, find the units you already have, and work forward one step at a time. No shortcuts, no guessing, no more freezing.
